Jewellery cabinet or jewellery box: how to choose the right one

You want to wear that one necklace, but it is tangled up with two others. You can only find one of your favourite earrings, and your rings are scattered across the bathroom and the bedside table. Jewellery is small, and precisely because of that it quickly gets lost or damaged. A jewellery box or jewellery cabinet gives every piece its own place. But which one suits you? In this guide you will read what to look for.

Jewellery box or jewellery cabinet?

The main difference lies in the amount of jewellery and where you want to keep it.

  • Jewellery box: compact, for your dressing table, sideboard or in a drawer. Ideal for a small to medium-sized collection.
  • Jewellery cabinet: more space, often with hooks for necklaces and a mirror. Handy if you have lots of jewellery or also want to store watches and perfume.
Model Type Features Suits
Vicente Jewellery box with glass lid 3 levels, velvet lining, 23.1 × 13.5 × 20.3 cm Your favourites visible and yet protected
Vexoria Compact jewellery box Smartly arranged interior, 15.3 × 25.1 × 21.5 cm On your dressing table, sideboard or in a drawer
Anela Jewellery cabinet with mirror Hooks, lock and magnetic door A larger collection, plus a mirror in one

Step 1: how big is your collection?

Put all your jewellery together. If you mainly wear a few favourite pieces, a jewellery box is enough. Do you have lots of necklaces, bracelets and earrings, or do you also want to keep watches, perfume and nail polish together? Then a jewellery cabinet is handier. The Anela has lots of storage space and hooks for necklaces, earrings, bracelets, watches, perfume and nail polish.

Also take into account what is still to come. A box that is exactly full now may no longer be after a birthday or holiday.

Sort your jewellery straight away into three groups: what you wear almost daily, what you wear now and then and what you actually never wear any more. You want to be able to grab the first group quickly, the second can be a bit further away. That way you also immediately see how much space you really need, and you do not choose a box that is too small or unnecessarily large.

Step 2: look at the layout

Each type of jewellery calls for its own kind of compartment.

  • Rings: slots keep them upright and in place.
  • Earrings: small compartments prevent pairs from getting separated.
  • Necklaces: hanging or in narrow compartments, they do not get tangled.

The Vicente has 3 levels with slots for rings, compartments for earrings and narrow compartments for necklaces. On the Anela you hang necklaces on hooks, so you see them at a glance. The Vexoria has a smartly arranged interior that keeps your jewellery organised.

Step 3: protection and a lock

Soft on the inside

Jewellery that lies against each other can get scratched. A soft lining helps. The Vicente has a velvet lining that protects gemstones and pearls and is made of MDF with faux leather.

Visible or out of sight

With a glass lid, as on the Vicente, you see your most beautiful pieces without opening the box. If you prefer a calm look, choose a closed box or a cabinet with a mirror door.

With a lock

Do you want to store valuable pieces extra securely? Then choose a model with a lock. The Anela has a lock and a magnetic door.

Step 4: where will it go?

  • On your dressing table or sideboard: a compact box such as the Vexoria fits well there, or in a drawer.
  • As a permanent beauty spot: the Anela combines a full-length mirror with a jewellery cabinet. Handy and space-saving, because you have your mirror and your jewellery in one place.
  • Choose a dressing table with storage space: the Auralyn dressing table comes with a stool with hidden storage space for make-up and jewellery. The Alain dressing table has four drawers with compartments for make-up and jewellery and a round, dimmable LED mirror. Read more in Choosing a dressing table.
  • On the wall: the Angelo wall shelf has a playful cube design in which you display books, CDs, jewellery and other small items.

Step 5: choose a style that suits you

A jewellery box is often on display, so its look counts too. The Vicente and the Vexoria are beige and suit different interior styles. The Vexoria has a contemporary design. A jewellery box also makes a lovely gift for someone who loves wearing jewellery.

Tips for keeping your jewellery looking good

  • Daily items on top: put the jewellery you wear most often at the top or front, so you grab it quickly.
  • Clasp closed: fasten necklaces before you put them away, so they are less likely to get tangled.
  • Out of the bathroom: preferably do not keep jewellery in a humid room.
  • Good light: choose your jewellery at an illuminated mirror. Take a look at our mirrors or compare all models on Buy a Hollywood mirror.
