Choosing a bathroom cabinet: smart storage in a small space

MAZAZU onderkast Willow in wit onder de wastafel

Shampoo on the edge of the bath, hand cream and toothpaste on the washbasin and spare towels in a pile in the corner. In a bathroom, space is scarce, and that is exactly where you use lots of small items every day. A good bathroom cabinet makes use of spots that are now empty: the wall, the space under your washbasin or the height in your shower corner. In this guide you will read which type suits your bathroom and what to look for.

Which type of bathroom cabinet suits you?

Type Handy for Dimensions (w × d × h) For example
Wall cabinet Toiletries, hair care and perfume out of sight, without using floor space 60 × 20 × 70 cm Marina
Under-sink cabinet The space under your washbasin, with a cut-out for the trap 60 × 30 × 60 cm Willow
Open rack Towels and bottles nicely on display 40 × 30 × 124.5 cm Grivora 5-tier
Floor-to-ceiling shower rack Shampoo and soap within reach in the shower 35 × 25 × 305 cm Baliah
Shower rack with hooks Shower products, flannels and a towel 34 × 24.5 × 300 cm Bastian

Step 1: find the unused space

First look at where there is still room in your bathroom. Often it is not on the floor, but on the wall or in the height.

  • The wall: above the toilet or next to the mirror you can hang a wall cabinet like the Marina. It is only 20 cm deep and so sticks out very little.
  • Under the washbasin: this space around the drain often stays empty. The Willow has a 20 × 15 cm cut-out for the trap.
  • The height: you clamp the Baliah between floor and ceiling with a spring-loaded telescopic top pole. That way you use the height instead of the floor.
  • A narrow gap: do you have a gap next to the washing machine or bathroom vanity? The Jinte storage cabinet is 17 cm deep, has 4 PP drawers and stands on castors. According to the product description, it is also handy in the bathroom.

Step 2: measure accurately

In a bathroom, every centimetre counts. Measure the width, depth and height of the spot and take into account doors that need to be able to open, such as the door of your shower cubicle or bathroom. For an under-sink cabinet, also measure the position and size of your trap and the height under your washbasin, so you know for sure that the cabinet fits.

For a shower rack, measure the height from floor to ceiling. The Baliah is 305 cm high, but if you have less height, you leave out one of the poles.

Step 3: think about moisture and water

A bathroom is humid, and in the shower water lands directly on your rack. So choose materials that suit this.

  • In the shower: the Bastian is made of 304 stainless steel and has drainage holes that prevent standing water. The Baliah has a powder-coated steel tube and shelves of extra thick plastic (PP) and is rust-resistant.
  • Under the washbasin: the Willow is made of lacquered MDF, easy to clean and resistant to moisture.
  • On the wall: the Marina is made of MDF (E1) and keeps your things behind a double door.

Ventilate your bathroom well after showering and wipe away splashes. That is better for every piece of furniture in the bathroom.

Step 4: open or closed storage?

Behind a door

Doors keep the bathroom calm. The Marina has a double door with a shelf you can set at 5 heights, plus an open compartment for what you use daily. On the Willow, the doors open up to 180° and an adjustable shelf divides the interior into 2 compartments. Towels, cleaning products and toilet paper stay protected from dust and water.

Open shelves

Beautiful towels and bottles may also be seen. The Grivora has 5 tiers with tempered glass shelves in a gold-coloured steel frame. Each shelf holds up to 10 kg and it has adjustable feet and an anti-tip kit.

Hooks and adjustable shelves

The Bastian has 4 shelves, 3 hooks and 1 towel holder. With the rubber rings you slide the shelves up or down, so large bottles fit too. On the Baliah you set the shelves at any height in the same way.

What else to look for

  • Stability: secure tall cabinets and racks to the wall. The Grivora comes with an anti-tip kit.
  • Colour: white suits virtually any bathroom and makes a small room look bigger. Gold, as on the Grivora, adds a luxurious accent.
  • Assembly: the Marina is mounted on the wall. Check in advance what kind of wall you have and which wall plugs go with it.

Tips for a tidy bathroom

  • Daily items within reach: put your toothbrush and day cream in the open compartment, spare supplies behind the door.
  • Combine: a wall cabinet above the toilet and an under-sink cabinet under the washbasin complement each other well.
  • An extra shelf: according to the product description, you can also use the Lela wall shelf with rounded ends in the bathroom. You will find more models among the wall shelves.
  • Beyond the bathroom too: read in Choosing a storage cabinet how to bring more order to the rest of your home.
