The furniture is in place, but it does not feel quite finished yet. The walls are bare, the floor sounds hollow and after a rainy day the hallway is one big puddle. That is exactly where home accessories make the difference. With a few well-chosen pieces you give a room personality and keep it tidy at the same time. In this guide you will read how to style home accessories, room by room and step by step.
What do you want to achieve?
| You want | Choose | For example |
|---|---|---|
| Memories on the wall | A set of photo frames for a photo wall | Falorien, set of 10 black frames |
| Photos you can easily swap | A picture ledge with a lip | Lindy, 115 cm long |
| Plants and decoration on the wall | Wall shelves | Layla, Loreen |
| Making use of a bare corner | Corner wall shelf with 5 levels | Artemis |
| Warmth on the floor | A jute or cotton rug | Ibiza, Imperatorz |
| A dry, neat hallway | An umbrella stand with drip tray | Phyrion |
Step 1: create a photo wall
Photos make a home personal. With odd frames in all sorts of sizes, a photo wall quickly looks busy, which is why a set in one colour and size works well. The Falorien is a set of 10 black 24.7 × 19.6 cm frames with anti-reflective glass. You hang them with the two built-in hooks or stand them up with the stand, and with the clips on the back you easily swap photos.
- Lay them out on the floor first: move the frames around until you have an arrangement you like, and only then hang them.
- Keep equal spacing: a fixed distance between the frames gives calm, even with a playful arrangement.
- Choose a focal point: above a sofa or console table, your photo wall has a clear anchor.
Would you rather not drill for every photo? The Lindy is a picture ledge with a slim lip at the front, so your frames stay in place without sliding. That way you swap photos without new holes in the wall. The Stephanie wall shelves are a set of 2 floating shelves in high-gloss white, also intended for your photo frames.
Step 2: style your wall shelves
A wall shelf is more than storage space. It is a place to show what you find beautiful.
- Work in groups of three: a plant, a stack of books and a small object look calmer together than a row of separate items.
- Vary in height: place a tall vase next to something low, which gives your shelf depth.
- Leave space: a shelf that is not completely full looks well cared for.
The Layla has a rustic wood look on a black metal frame and holds up to 15 kg per shelf. The Loreen has rounded ends and shelves you can turn over for your own look. Make use of a bare corner with the Artemis: a corner wall shelf with 5 levels in a zigzag shape, with 20 cm between each shelf. It is available in black, brown and grey. Step 3: lay a rug
A rug brings warmth and defines a seating area or dining area. It also protects your floor.
- Natural and rustic: the Imperatorz in natural jute (240 × 160 cm) is hand-braided and insulates against cold and noise from the floor.
- With a touch of colour: the Ibiza (244 × 157 cm) is handwoven from jute and cotton and has an ethnic look.
- Smaller size: the cotton rugs Irradiate (183 × 126 cm) and Inswennity (180 × 124 cm) suit vintage, rustic and Scandinavian interiors. With its colourful design, the Inswennity adds contrast to a room with neutral tones.
Preferably lay a rug so that the front legs of your sofa are on it, then the seating area feels like one whole. With handmade rugs, small differences in size and pattern are possible. That makes every rug unique.
Step 4: start with the hallway
The hallway is the first thing you and your guests see. A few smart accessories keep it neat. The Phyrion is a narrow 15.5 × 15.5 × 49 cm umbrella stand with a removable drip tray that catches the water, and two hooks for extra accessories. Its white perforated pattern of raindrops and umbrellas instantly makes it a decorative accent. Give your shoes a fixed place too, read Shoe rack or shoe bench for that.
Tips for a cohesive whole
- Choose one or two colours that keep coming back, for example black and wood. Black frames then go with a shelf with a black frame.
- Mix materials: jute, wood and metal make a room warm and interesting.
- Think about light: an atmospheric lamp on a side table completes your styling. Read more in Choosing a cordless table lamp.
- Less is more: start with a few pieces and only add more once you notice what you are missing.
