Choosing a desk and office chair for your home workspace

Quickly opening your laptop at the dining table seems handy, but after a few hours you feel it in your neck and back. And at the end of the day everything has to come off the table again. A home workspace of your own, with a desk that fits and a chair that supports you well, makes working or studying at home a lot more pleasant. In this guide you will read how to choose the desk and office chair that suit you and your space.

Which desk suits you?

Most MAZAZU desks combine a metal frame with a tabletop in a vintage or wood look. The biggest difference is in the shape and the size.

Situation Choose Our models
Small room or a workspace you use occasionally Foldable 100 × 50 cm computer desk Lyrielle
A straight workspace in the living room or study Straight 120 × 60 cm desk Lazuriel brown/black
Lots of workspace and an extra screen Corner desk with a movable monitor stand Liora brown, Liora black
A corner you want to use better, with storage space Corner desk with two equally long sides Lethoria brown, Lethoria dark grey

Step 1: measure your space

Start by measuring. Do not only look at the spot for the desk itself, but also at the space for your chair. You want to be able to roll back and stand up without bumping into a cupboard or the bed. So allow some extra space behind the desk.

  • Little space: the Lyrielle is 100 × 50 cm and foldable. Finished working? Then you fold it up and slide it aside.
  • A fixed workspace: the Lazuriel gives you a straight 120 × 60 cm desktop, enough for a laptop, a screen and your papers.
  • An empty corner: the Liora measures 140 × 130 cm and the Lethoria 138 × 138 cm. A corner desk takes up more floor, but you also get much more work surface in return.

Step 2: straight desk or corner desk?

Do you mainly work on a laptop and want to use the room for other things too? Then a straight desk or a foldable table is often enough. Do you work with several screens, or want to keep part of the top free for writing, drawing or studying? Then an L-shaped corner desk gives you two work zones in one.

On the Liora you slide the 20 × 90 cm monitor stand along the edge with star screws to the spot you want. The Lethoria has two equally long sides, so it fits in almost any corner.

Step 3: storage space and cables

A clear desktop feels calmer. So also look at what you need to store:

  • Shelves: the brown Lethoria has 2 shelves for folders and books.
  • Drawer and storage compartment: the dark grey Lethoria has a drawer and a large storage compartment, handy for pens, chargers and papers.
  • Hooks: on both sides of the Lyrielle you hang your bag, cables or headphones.
  • Cables: on the Lethoria the back corner has been deliberately left open, so you can easily route your cables through it.

Have more things? Put books and binders in a bookcase or on a wall shelf next to your desk.

Step 4: choose the right office chair

You can easily spend hours a day in your office chair, so it deserves at least as much attention as the desk. All MAZAZU office chairs have a breathable mesh backrest.

Chair Strong point Best for
Brioryn High 65 cm mesh backrest with lumbar support and padded headrest Long working days, support all the way up to your neck
Brynella black/grey Synchro mechanism, backrest tilts up to 102 degrees Anyone who often changes position
Belle Lumbar support, seat height 42 to 50 cm, armrests adjustable from 67 to 75 cm Setting the chair up exactly to your size
Benjamin Deep 48 × 50 cm seat, seat height 43 to 52.5 cm and tilt function Long legs, at home or in the office

What to look for in an office chair

  • Back support: a backrest with lumbar support supports your lower back. The Brioryn and the Belle have one.
  • Seat height: your feet are flat on the floor and your knees are at roughly a 90-degree angle. If you are tall, check the adjustment range, such as the 43 to 52.5 cm of the Benjamin.
  • Movement: with a tilt function or synchro mechanism you can lean back for a moment between tasks. On the Brynella, the seat and back angle move together.
  • Wheels: the Brioryn, Brynella and Benjamin roll on PU wheels, the Belle on hard-wearing nylon wheels. On a delicate floor, consider placing a floor mat under your chair.

Step 5: make your desk and chair work together

A good chair only really works if it suits the height of your desk. First set your seat height, so your feet are flat on the floor. Then check whether your forearms rest relaxed on the desktop. If your shoulders are raised, you are sitting too low. If your arms hang down, you are sitting too high. On chairs with adjustable armrests, such as the Belle, set them at the same height as your desktop, so you can pull up comfortably.

Tips for a pleasant home workspace

  • Ideally, place your desk at a right angle to the window. That way you have daylight, but less glare on your screen.
  • Place your screen at eye level and roughly an arm's length away. A monitor stand, such as on the Liora, helps with that.
  • Make sure you have light in the evening. You can place a cordless table lamp on your desk without an extra cord.
  • Keep a spot free next to your desk for a printer or papers, for example on a small side table. Which one suits you, you can read in Choosing a side table or coffee table.
  • Stand up and walk around every now and then. Even the best chair does not replace movement.
